Pearl River County officials have opened self-serve sandbag sites across the county as residents prepare for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Bertha, the county said on Facebook.
The county listed the following locations as open: Pearl River County Emergency Operations Center, 810 Hwy. 11 South, Poplarville; Pine Grove Volunteer Fire Department station 71, 86 Pine Grove Road, Picayune; South East Volunteer Fire Department station 122, 298 Salem Road, Picayune; Nicholson Volunteer Fire Department station 131, 1981 Hwy. 11 South, Picayune; and Carriere Volunteer Fire Department station 111, 7414 Hwy. 11 South, Carriere.
Residents must bring a shovel and fill their own sandbags, the county said. Sand and bags are supplied at each location.
Sandbags are a temporary measure used to divert water and reduce localized flooding; they do not guarantee protection from major storm surge or extensive flooding. Local officials commonly make sandbags available ahead of tropical systems to help homeowners protect low-lying property. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
