Bicyclist dies in early-morning crash on Highway 611
A bicyclist died early Sunday in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 611 in Jackson County, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said. The crash occurred about 5 a.m., and the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The patrol identified the bicyclist as Temario Compton, 35, of Mobile. The crash involved a 2008 Honda Accord driven by Dilaila Ortiz, 22, of Gautier, and a 2016 Toyota Camry driven by James Baxter, 39. Officials said both drivers were traveling north on Highway 611 when their vehicles struck the bicyclist.
Neither Ortiz nor Baxter was injured, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said. The agency, which is responsible for investigating traffic crashes across the state, is probing the cause of the collision and collecting evidence at the scene.
Bicyclist deaths on public roads remain a public safety concern, prompting attention to roadway design, visibility and traffic enforcement. The Mississippi Highway Patrol said the investigation is ongoing. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
