UMMC opens psychiatric emergency unit in adult ER

University of Mississippi Medical Center has opened a dedicated psychiatric emergency services unit within its adult emergency department, creating a safer space and a more coordinated approach for patients in crisis, the medical center said in a Facebook post. The announcement linked to a news release on UMMC’s website describing the expansion of specialized mental health care access.

UMMC, the state’s academic medical center based in Jackson, provides clinical care, research and training for health professionals across Mississippi. The center serves as a referral hub for complex medical and psychiatric cases in the region.

Specialized psychiatric emergency units are designed to offer focused assessment, stabilization and coordination with outpatient or inpatient services, officials said. Proponents say such units can improve patient safety and deliver care tailored to people experiencing acute mental health crises.

The move reflects broader efforts by hospitals to expand access to mental health services and to better meet demand for crisis care in emergency settings. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
