Lowndes County sheriff warns of bail bond phone scams
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers impersonating deputies and claiming that a family member has been arrested. The callers demand money to get the person out of jail, sometimes directing victims to buy gift cards or send cryptocurrency.
The Sheriff’s Office said it will never call and demand money over the phone to bond someone out of jail. Residents should hang up, avoid sending money or financial information, and contact the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center or Sheriff’s Office through an official phone number to verify the claim.
Residents also should contact the loved one or another trusted family member directly and report suspicious calls to law enforcement. The warning advises verifying information before taking action, even when a caller sounds convincing or claims to be a law enforcement officer.
