Hiram Gatewood Jr. marks 45 years training dentists, serving hometown
Dr. Hiram Gatewood Jr. has spent 45 years balancing patient care, teaching future dentists and serving his hometown, the University of Mississippi Medical Center said in a Facebook post.
Gatewood is a member of the School of Dentistry’s third graduating class and, according to the post, has helped shape the next generation of oral health professionals while living out values of compassion and service taught to him by his father.
Faculty at dental schools provide clinical care, classroom instruction and mentorship to students preparing for careers in oral health. Long tenures among faculty members can provide continuity in training and community outreach, and they often contribute to the institutional memory and culture of a school.
