Tupelo to begin enforcing kratom ordinance Sept. 12

The Tupelo Police Department said enforcement of a city ordinance prohibiting kratom and kratom products will begin Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.

The Tupelo City Council adopted the ordinance on Feb. 3, 2026. Enforcement was delayed while a legal challenge proceeded through the courts, and businesses were allowed to continue selling kratom products during that period.

Businesses currently selling kratom or kratom products should prepare to comply with the ordinance, the department said. Chief John Quaka said the city is providing businesses with 48 hours’ notice and an opportunity to come into compliance, with the goal of voluntary compliance.
