Lafayette County sheriff offers fall deer-safety tips for drivers

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to watch for deer as fall arrives and the animals become more active, particularly around dawn and dusk.

The office advises motorists to slow down in areas where deer are common and watch roadsides, especially near wooded areas. Drivers should use high beams when appropriate and when no oncoming traffic is present.

If a deer crosses the roadway, motorists should brake firmly and stay in their lane rather than swerve, which could cause them to lose control. The office also cautions that seeing one deer may mean others are nearby.
