Mounted patrol works 72 hours during Ole Miss football weekend
The Oxford Mounted Patrol spent 72 hours providing crowd safety in downtown Oxford during the weekend of what the Oxford Police Department described as the most anticipated football game in Ole Miss history.
The department said the operation followed months of planning, selection and training. Officers and auxiliaries worked through intense heat and long hours while remaining on post across the downtown area.
The horses were fed, watered, rested and checked before officers attended to their own needs, according to the department. Together, the mounted units represented roughly 20,000 pounds of horses working to support weekend safety.
Some horse-and-rider partnerships have been together for more than a decade, the department said, describing that experience as central to the teams’ work.
The department credited Friends of the Mounted Patrol Oxford, the Mobile Police Department, the Mobile Mounted Police Auxiliary, Lafayette County and Bim Bam Burgers with helping make the operation possible.
