Mississippi State’s Oboniye, Pitta make strong ITA All-American showing

Mississippi State’s Gianna Oboniye and Athina Pitta advanced through the prequalifying draw and into qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina, while Oboniye reached the 64-player singles main draw.

The No. 6-seeded doubles team opened by defeating Marshall’s Alina Mokrynska and Isabelle Walker in the round of 16. Oboniye and Pitta then beat No. 45 Olivia Center and Ahmani Guichard of UCLA in a match decided by a 10-point tiebreaker. After losing the opening set 7-5, they won the second set 6-1 and took the tiebreaker 10-3.

Their doubles run ended in the next round of qualifying. In singles, Oboniye secured a place in the main draw by defeating UCLA’s Guichard 6-4, 6-3 in the final round of qualifying.

Oboniye then defeated No. 11 Jana Hossam of Florida 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of the main draw to advance to the round of 32. Her singles run later moved to the consolation draw, where Virginia’s Vivian Yang won 6-2, 7-6(1) to end Oboniye’s tournament.
