Laney receives SSAC Coach of Character Award
Montgomery, Alabama — Blue Mountain Christian University cross country and track coach Phillip Laney received the Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of Character Award Monday evening during the conference’s annual awards banquet, the SSAC said.
The award recognizes coaches who exemplify the conference’s core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. Laney has led the Topper cross country program for 14 years and founded Blue Mountain’s track and field program in 2022.
Laney said coaching has always been about investing in young people and helping them discover their gifts and purpose. “I have been blessed to coach so many outstanding student-athletes over the years, and this award is really a reflection of the people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside,” he said.
Blue Mountain Director of Athletics Curt Fowler praised Laney’s influence on athletes and the department. “Phillip Laney is one of the finest Christian coaches I have ever been around,” Fowler said, adding that Laney points student-athletes toward growth as competitors, students and followers of Christ.
Under Laney’s leadership, the programs have emphasized competitive improvement, academic success and Christian character. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
