Jackson State defeated Houston Christian 3-2 Friday at the Southern Miss Wellness Center in Hattiesburg, improving to 4-4 on the season. The Tigers won by set scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-10, 24-26 and 15-13.
Jackson State recorded 58 kills, six service aces, 66 digs and seven total blocks while hitting .199. Houston Christian had 48 kills and an .089 attacking percentage.
Houston Christian forced the deciding set by winning the fourth 26-24 after Jackson State reached match point at 24-21. The fifth set was tied at 10 before the Tigers moved ahead 13-11. After Houston Christian twice pulled within one point, Hope Briggs put Jackson State at match point with a kill, and a late Houston Christian service error ended the match at 15-13.
Briggs led Jackson State with 15 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, four total blocks and 17.5 points. Shelby Zanders added 11 kills on 19 attempts with one error, a .526 hitting percentage and five block assists.
Ryleigh Davis had eight kills, while Sophia McKenzie finished with nine kills and 11 digs. Parker Featherstone contributed five kills, three service aces and 11 digs.
Kayla Troutman recorded a team-best 30 assists, and Naija Gadis added 16. Giannelle Asomani led the Lady Tigers with 17 digs.
Jackson State will play Lamar and Southern Miss to close out the weekend. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
