Winter storm assistance deadline nears for affected residents

Residents in counties affected by the Jan. 23-27 winter storms have five days left to apply for disaster assistance, a Facebook post said. Applicants may apply online, by phone, through the FEMA app or by visiting one of several Disaster Recovery Service Centers, the post said.

The centers are located in Alcorn, Lafayette, Panola, Leflore, Benton, Yazoo, Carroll, Coahoma, Montgomery, Tallahatchie, Pontotoc, Marshall and Tishomingo counties, the post said. Centers are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the post said.

Federal disaster assistance programs typically provide support for temporary housing, home repairs and other needs not covered by insurance, and recovery centers are intended to help residents register and learn about available resources. Applicants generally work with staff at centers or through application portals to submit required information.

The approaching deadline could affect eligibility for some forms of assistance, so officials urge affected residents to apply as soon as possible. Applicants should be prepared to provide identification and documentation of damage when requested. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
