Rankin County Sheriff’s Office mourns K-9 Deputy Fox
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office announced that its K-9 deputy, Fox, died on June 5, 2026, after suffering a medical emergency while assisting in the search for a juvenile escapee on May 21, 2026, the office said.
Following emergency veterinary treatment, doctors discovered an undiagnosed tumor that had ruptured and caused life-threatening internal bleeding, the statement said. Despite the efforts of veterinary specialists and the support of his handler, Deputy Decell, Fox died at home with his family that evening, the office said.
Sheriff Bryan Bailey said, “Fox served our community with honor and dedication. He stood beside his handler through countless hours of training and service, always ready to do his job without hesitation. Our hearts are broken by this loss, and we are deeply grateful for the years of service he gave to the people of Rankin County. Fox will never be forgotten.”
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office asked the community to keep Deputy Decell and his family in their thoughts and prayers and extended appreciation to the veterinary staff and to citizens and fellow officers who offered support. Law enforcement K-9s assist with tracking, suspect location and public safety, and agencies often regard them as members of the family. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
