Three school employees sentenced for embezzling nearly $400,000

Two former school superintendents and a schoolteacher from Mississippi and Missouri have been sentenced after prosecutors said they stole nearly $400,000 in Department of Education funds, Mississippi State Auditor Shad White said.

White said his office worked with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi and the Trump administration’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud in the case. “Thank you to my team that helped uncover the facts on this case and to the US Attorney’s Office for prosecuting. We will continue to work as hard as we can to hold anyone who steals taxpayer funds accountable,” said State Auditor Shad White in a Facebook post.

The post said the arrests and ultimate prosecution were actions of President Trump’s National Fraud Enforcement Division. White’s office did not provide additional details about the sentences, including the length of any prison terms or restitution amounts.

Federal and state prosecutors commonly pursue cases involving misuse of federal education funds to protect taxpayer dollars; convictions can carry prison time, fines and orders for restitution. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
