Nonprofit helps protect LCSO K-9s
A local nonprofit is providing support to K-9s serving with the LCSO, the agency said in a Facebook post. The post said police dogs face many of the same dangers as their human counterparts while in the line of duty, but they do not always have access to resources they need to stay safe.
K-9 units perform a range of duties, including detection of narcotics and explosives, tracking suspects, crowd control and search-and-rescue operations. Those tasks can expose dogs to hazards such as traffic, hazardous substances and violent encounters, experts say.
Nonprofit organizations that back law enforcement K-9 programs typically raise funds to help cover training, equipment and veterinary care that may fall outside a department’s regular budget. Support from outside groups can extend a K-9’s working life and reduce costs for taxpayers by offsetting emergency medical bills or specialized training expenses.
