National Weather Service issues slight risk for Mississippi storms

The National Weather Service has issued a slight risk for severe weather across Mississippi on May 19, 2026, with conditions expected this afternoon into the evening, a Facebook post warned. The post urged residents to “Stay weather aware today, Mississippi!”

Slight risk is one of the categories the Storm Prediction Center, part of the National Weather Service, uses in its convective outlooks to indicate that organized severe thunderstorms are possible. It is a step above a marginal risk in the center’s five-tier scale.

Officials and weather services typically advise people in areas under a slight risk to monitor forecasts closely, keep a battery-powered radio or weather app available and have a plan for moving to a safe location if warnings are issued. Severe thunderstorms can produce damaging winds, hail and localized flooding, so timely alerts are important.

Mississippi commonly faces severe weather in the spring months, and residents are urged to remain vigilant through the evening. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
