Mississippi reports storm, flood damage; opens three shelters

The State of Mississippi is continuing to respond to severe storms and flooding as damage assessments remain ongoing, the state said in a Facebook post.

Officials provided preliminary totals that they warned could change as assessments continue: homes destroyed, 18; major damage, 110; minor damage, 115; affected, 74. Businesses with major damage, 3; businesses with minor damage, 4. Farms with major damage, 1. Public roads destroyed, 16; major damage, 22; minor damage, 32. Bridges with major damage, 1; minor damage, 1. Public buildings with major damage, 3. Public utilities with major damage, 2; minor damage, 2.

Three shelters remain open, the post said: Hancock County Necaise Shelter, 30360 Highway 603, Perkinson; Harrison County Safe Room, 23715 Saucier Lizana Road, Saucier; and Stone Middle School Shelter, 532A E. Central Ave., Wiggins.

The post added that 10 rivers remain in minor flood stage and are dropping, and that the state will continue to deploy resources as requested by local emergency managers alongside local, state and federal partners. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
