Let dogs out as yard care shifts for summer

May is National Pet Month and prime lawn and gardening season, prompting pet owners to rethink yard care so outdoor spaces are safe for animals, according to a StatePoint news release.

The release highlights pet-friendly maintenance choices and quotes veterinarian Marty Becker, a member of the Spruce Weed & Grass Killer Alliance. “It’s critical for pet parents to keep their pets in mind when choosing lawn or weed control products,” Becker said, adding that pets groom themselves and may retain substances on their skin and fur.

The release says Spruce Weed & Grass Killer is made with 10 ingredients and that the maker claims it is safe for use around people, pets and bees when used as directed. The manufacturer also says users can see results in as little as an hour and dead weeds in a day. The product is described in the release as being backed by Best Friends Animal Society, SPCA Cincinnati and Fear Free Happy Homes.

Beyond products, the release recommends creating designated play areas, providing shaded resting spots and checking regularly for hazards such as sharp debris to keep yards safe for pets. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
