Hurricane season begins; coastal residents urged to prepare
Hurricane season begins today, and coastal residents are being urged to prepare, a Facebook post reminded. The season runs June 1-Nov. 30, the period when tropical storms and hurricanes most commonly develop in the Atlantic basin.
The social media post joked that many people check the forecast then immediately head to Walmart, but it delivered a serious safety reminder. The post said a watch means hazardous conditions are possible, while a warning means those conditions are expected, and it urged residents to stay alert and act accordingly.
Emergency managers typically advise assembling an emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, prescription medications and flashlights; securing outdoor items; knowing evacuation routes; and following guidance from local officials and the National Weather Service. Staying informed through official channels can give families and businesses time to protect property and make safe plans.
Residents should monitor forecasts and local emergency information as storms develop. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
