Hurricane Preparedness Week urges residents to take action today
A Facebook reel marking Day 7 of Hurricane Preparedness Week urged people to take steps now to prepare for the storm season, saying preparedness starts with individuals and that “every step you take today makes a difference tomorrow.” The short social media message encouraged viewers not to wait for a storm to begin preparations.
Hurricane Preparedness Week is an annual observance that encourages residents in storm-prone areas to review plans, assemble emergency supplies and stay informed. Atlantic hurricane season typically runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, and public officials and emergency managers commonly use the week to remind communities about basic readiness actions.
Recommended preparedness measures include assembling an emergency kit with water, food, medicines and important documents; developing and practicing an evacuation plan with family or household members; securing outdoor items that can become projectiles in high winds; and monitoring official weather forecasts and local emergency instructions.
Taking steps before a storm approaches can reduce risk and speed recovery. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
