Two dead in officer-involved shooting

Aug. 8, 2024 – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the Summit Police Department and McComb Police Department that occurred on Aug. 8.

Officers with the Summit Police Department were working a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue when a car approached and a passenger subject presented a weapon towards the officers, striking one Summit police officer causing fatal injuries.

Two additional McComb police officers arrived in the area and encountered the subject engaging in an exchange of gunfire.

Both officers received non-life-threatening injuries in the exchange and the subject received fatal injuries.

This information is preliminary and subject to change.

MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.

The Summit police officer who died has since been identified as Troy Floyd.

Aug. 9, 2024 – Friday, the identities of the suspect and the others involved in the shooting incident were identified, as reported by WAPT-TV. The suspect was identified as Usher Leonard.

Aug. 12, 2024 – Gov. Tate Reeves Monday issued an executive order to have American and Mississippi state flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Floyd.
