Mississippi DOT reminds public political signs are barred from state highway rights-of-way

The Mississippi Department of Transportation reminded the public that political signs are not permitted within the rights-of-way of state highways as campaign season approaches.

The agency said illegally placed signs contribute to Mississippi’s litter problem and that keeping highway rights-of-way clear helps prevent safety hazards and interference with the traveling public.

Signs mounted on steel or wooden posts can damage roadside equipment and may become projectiles if struck by mowers, according to the department. Signs also must not interfere with a driver’s sight distance.
