Louisiana bear captured in Mississippi and fitted with GPS collar

A black bear originally orphaned in Louisiana was recently captured in Mississippi’s Wilkinson County and fitted with a GPS collar, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

The bear was orphaned as a cub in Louisiana in 2020, rehabilitated and later released on Tunica Hills WMA. She is now six years old and is expected to have cubs this spring.

MDWFP Wildlife Biologist Anthony Ballard identified the bear after receiving a report of a tagged bear in Wilkinson County and recognizing that the tags belonged to a bear from Louisiana.

The agency said the bear’s movement illustrates how state wildlife agencies work together to conserve and manage black bear populations across state lines.
