Tornado warning active for Pike, Walthall counties in Mississippi

A tornado warning is in effect for Pike and Walthall counties in Mississippi until 6:45 p.m. CDT, a Facebook post said.

A tornado warning indicates that a tornado has been sighted or is indicated by weather radar and that people in the warned area face imminent danger. Residents in the affected counties should take the threat seriously and seek shelter immediately.

Officials generally advise moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, staying away from windows and exterior walls, and covering heads to protect against flying debris. People in mobile homes should seek safer shelter, such as a nearby building or designated storm shelter.

The National Weather Service issues watches and warnings and recommends that residents monitor local emergency alerts, weather radio, television and official social media channels for updates. Local emergency management agencies typically provide additional guidance on evacuation routes and shelter locations.
