Stolen vehicle leads to weapons recovery, suspects detained near Benton
YAZOO COUNTY, Mississippi — A stolen black four-door sedan detected by a Flock camera system late June 18 led deputies to recover weapons and detain multiple suspects, the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office said.
At approximately 10:56 p.m., the Flock camera system alerted deputies to the reported stolen vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 16, the sheriff’s office said in a social media post. At about 11:50 p.m., a deputy located the car abandoned and unoccupied on Highway 16 near Sunny Lane Road.
Soon after, the deputy observed four to five male subjects running eastbound on Highway 16 near Mollette Road, running into a nearby driveway and out of sight, the statement said. Responding deputies found three of the suspects within minutes. Two AR-style pistols were recovered, and one of the firearms was confirmed stolen. Officials believe one or two additional male subjects remain at large; investigators have not released identifying information other than that the individuals were wearing dark-colored clothing.
The Yazoo County Sheriff’s Office asked residents in the Benton area to remain vigilant and to report suspicious persons or activity by calling 662-746-0014. A Flock camera system is a networked license-plate reader some law enforcement agencies use to detect stolen vehicles. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
