Sharkey County upgrades booking with electronic fingerprint system

SHARKEY COUNTY, Miss. — The Sharkey County Sheriffs Department has acquired an IDEMIA LiveScan electronic fingerprinting system that will allow deputies to capture and transmit fingerprints and mugshots directly to state databases, sheriff Herbert D. Ceaser Sr. said.

The department recently purchased the system using grant funding secured by department employee Angela Jenkins, Ceaser said. The LiveScan unit electronically captures fingerprints, palm prints and facial images at booking, reducing paperwork and turnaround time compared with ink-based methods that required manual processing and mailing to state agencies.

The system uses FBI-certified scanners and is compatible with existing records management systems, officials said. It can flag whether a subject has been booked under a different identity and link individuals to records in other law enforcement databases. According to the department, the technology also supports iris scans and documentation of scars, marks and tattoos.

Sharkey County is one of the smaller sheriffs departments in the state, and grant-funded technology purchases have become a common way for rural agencies to obtain equipment they otherwise could not afford. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
