Rankin County sheriff’s department experiences telephone outage

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday it is experiencing a telephone outage tied to ongoing construction in the area of North Street, leaving both emergency 911 and nonemergency lines inoperable.

The department said in a Facebook post that neighboring agencies are receiving 911 and nonemergency calls and relaying them to deputies by police radio. Officials advised anyone wishing to file a nonemergency police report to come to the sheriff’s office at 221 North Timber Street in Brandon, Mississippi.

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department is the primary county law enforcement agency and is responsible for patrol, investigations and emergency response coordination. An outage that affects 911 service can pose public safety challenges, which is why agencies commonly use radio relays and in-person reporting as temporary measures.

The department said it will post an update when telephone systems are restored. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
