Picayune names James Bolton chief of police
PICAYUNE, Mississippi — The City of Picayune has named Assistant Chief James Bolton as its new chief of police, City Manager Harvey Miller said. Bolton, who has 35 years of law enforcement experience, was selected following a competitive interview process conducted by a selection committee.
Bolton began his public service career in Louisiana in 1991, working in corrections before moving to road patrol in 1995. He joined the Picayune Police Department in 2006 and has served in street, K-9 and motor patrols, narcotics, and as a field training officer. He has held ranks from patrol sergeant to lieutenant and captain/commander, and was named assistant chief in 2020.
City officials said Bolton has played an active role in identifying, writing and managing departmental grants to secure resources and equipment for public safety. The city also noted widespread support from residents and business owners during the selection process. “I got into law enforcement to treat people with dignity and respect, lead by example, and ensure our city remains a safe place to live and raise a family,” Bolton said. “I am deeply honored by this opportunity and look forward to continuing to serve Picayune to the best of my ability.”
Current Chief Joe Quave announced in June that he will retire in September; the city thanked Quave for his service. “Assistant Chief Bolton has proven his heart for this community time and time again over the past 20 years,” Miller said.
