Picayune installs flashing safety lights on Canal Street

Picayune City Hall has installed new flashing safety lights on Canal Street near Marilyn’s Xtreme Cheer, Leisha’s Dance Studio and Picayune TaeKwonDo to help protect local children, city officials said. A 15 mph speed limit is in effect in the area from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., the city said.

Officials said the lights are intended to make drivers extra cautious while children exit vehicles and cross the street to attend after-school activities. With dance recitals and spring events approaching, sidewalks and crosswalks are expected to be busier than usual.

Pictured at the installation were Mayor Jim Luke; City Manager Harvey Miller; Councilmembers Anna Turnage and Jan Stevens; Assistant Public Works Director Buckley Foster; Public Works Director Chris Pichon; and Master Bret Barras, owner of Picayune TaeKwonDo, the post said. The photo was credited to Amy Lewis.

City officials thanked residents for slowing down and helping keep children safe and said they will continue to monitor conditions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
