Mississippi PSC highlights workforce, safety efforts in April

JACKSON — The Mississippi Public Service Commission highlighted workforce development, infrastructure safety and community engagement across the state in its April newsletter, commissioners said.

The commission emphasized Safe Digging Month, recognizing Mississippi 811 and urging residents to call before beginning excavation to prevent damage to underground utilities. Staff from Mississippi 811 were honored during the commission’s April open meeting for their role in protecting critical infrastructure, officials said.

The commission hosted an Energy Workforce and Education Summit on April 2 at the Woolfolk Building in Jackson, bringing together leaders from education, industry and workforce development. Officials said the event focused on closing skills gaps and aligning training programs with the needs of Mississippi’s energy sector.

Commissioners also recognized April as Lineman Appreciation Month, highlighting utility crews who maintain and restore power under dangerous conditions and whose work proved critical during winter storms earlier this year. Northern District Chairman Chris Brown attended community meetings and visited electric power associations to recognize linemen and discuss recovery and infrastructure needs, officials said.

Central District Commissioner De’Keither Stamps emphasized workforce development and community outreach, including hosting students at the energy summit and supporting local programs in Lauderdale County and Brandon. Southern District Commissioner Wayne Carr highlighted participation in job fairs, energy expos and training events, and his district dedicated a workforce training center to a longtime Mississippi Power leader, officials said. The commission announced upcoming events, including its May open meeting and a Memorial Day flag-folding ceremony at the Mississippi Veterans Monument. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
