Facebook post urges caution amid heavy rain
A Facebook post warned motorists to use extra caution as heavy rain moves through the area, saying wet roads and reduced visibility can make travel hazardous.
The post urged drivers to slow down, increase following distance and allow extra time to reach destinations safely. It noted that roads people travel every day can become dangerous during periods of heavy rainfall.
Most importantly, the post said, “do not attempt to drive through flooded streets or areas with significant standing water.” It added that “it only takes a small amount of moving water to carry away a vehicle,” and that it is often impossible to judge the depth of water covering a roadway.
Wet pavement, pooling water and poor visibility increase the risk of crashes and hydroplaning, making slower speeds and greater following distances important. Officials ask motorists to stay alert and patient and to prioritize arriving safely over arriving quickly. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
