Crash delays I-55 traffic in both directions

Motorists are experiencing delays on Interstate 55 in both northbound and southbound lanes as first responders work at the scene of an accident, a traffic alert posted on Facebook said. Drivers were urged to be patient and to use alternate routes if possible.

I-55 is a major north-south highway that carries commuters and commercial traffic through the central United States, and incidents on the route can quickly create widespread backups and disrupt travel plans.

Authorities routinely ask motorists to slow down, move over and yield to emergency vehicles to protect responders working on or near the roadway. Observing those precautions also helps reduce the risk of secondary crashes and can speed the clearance of the incident.

No further details about the crash, any injuries or an estimated time for reopening were provided in the social media post. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
