Coahoma County warns of callers posing as law enforcement
The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday warned residents about telephone scams in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement, saying a person has been arrested, has outstanding warrants or is involved in another legal matter and demanding immediate payment by credit card, gift card, Cash App, Venmo, Zelle or other electronic methods, the agency said.
The sheriff’s office said law enforcement will never call and demand money over the phone to avoid arrest, pay a fine or secure the release of a family member. Scammers rely on fear and a sense of urgency to pressure victims into quick decisions and often request payment through peer-to-peer apps or gift cards.
The agency advised residents to hang up immediately, not provide personal or financial information and not send money. Anyone with concerns should verify the information by calling the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office nonemergency number at 662-624-3085, the office said.
The sheriff’s office asked residents to share the warning to help protect family, friends and neighbors from becoming victims of these scams. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
