Auto thefts target Nissan vehicles in Coahoma County

The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office has issued a community safety alert after reporting an increase in auto burglaries and vehicle thefts involving Nissan vehicles, the office said. Investigators believe suspects are using a vehicle programming device to gain access to and steal the cars.

Authorities urged residents to report anyone acting suspiciously, lingering around parked vehicles or attempting to access cars they do not appear to own. The sheriff’s office advised calling 911 if a crime is in progress or if someone appears to be in immediate danger.

Vehicle programming devices can allow thieves to bypass electronic locking and ignition systems by mimicking or reprogramming key signals, experts say. Law enforcement agencies nationwide have warned in recent years that such technology can be used to steal modern vehicles without a physical key.

The sheriff’s office encouraged residents to share the alert with family, friends and neighbors and to remain vigilant. Common precautions include locking vehicles, removing keys and parking in well-lit or secure areas, authorities said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
