Researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center have launched a study to investigate biological processes that drive prostate cancer when it spreads to bone, the center said. The project is backed by nearly $2.6 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute.
UMMC said prostate cancer that metastasizes to bone limits treatment options and can have severe effects on patients. Bone metastases are commonly linked to increased pain, fractures and other complications that complicate care and reduce quality of life.
The National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded the grant to support work aimed at uncovering mechanisms that could point to new therapeutic approaches in the future, UMMC said. Researchers hope better understanding of those biological processes will inform development of targeted treatments down the line.
The study adds to ongoing national efforts to address metastatic prostate cancer, a leading cancer diagnosis among men. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
