The Mississippi State Department of Health is encouraging residents to carry naloxone, saying the medication is free, easy to obtain and could save a life during an opioid overdose.
The department said anyone can keep naloxone in a backpack, car, home or another personal space. People may carry it privately and are not required to tell anyone they have it.

The guidance says people who suspect an overdose should give naloxone and call 911. The department also urged residents to learn the signs of an overdose and said having naloxone available could help if they are with someone experiencing one.
Information and requests for a free naloxone kit are available through msdh.ms.gov and odfree.org.
