A chapter in the book “Do What Works” examines the “Mississippi Miracle” and how Mississippi achieved its nationally celebrated education gains. The chapter was written by Gov. Tate Reeves and Dr. Carey Wright, the former Mississippi superintendent of education.
The account disputes the idea that the gains resulted from a single decision, saying they stemmed from a series of reforms that were passed and implemented.
Jon Ross Myers founded Mississippi News Group in 2013. Before founding the organization, he worked at The Daily Mississippian, The Marion Salute and The Southern Sentinel. A Mississippi journalist and writer based in Ripley, he received second place in poetry in the 2025 William Faulkner Literary Competition for "The Garden."
