Mississippi Parole Project workshop addresses legal rights and reentry
The Mississippi Parole Project launched at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in September with a workshop addressing legal rights, reentry readiness and personal empowerment.
Organizers and advocates worked with the community to provide inmates with clear information about complex institutional guidelines. Representatives from the Coalition also worked directly with inmates to explain certain rights within the justice system.
Speakers said many individuals are already eligible or close to eligibility for parole but lack a clear plan for preparing their files. The presentation outlined steps for petitioning courts and building reentry files, giving participants practical guidance for their legal proceedings.
The Coalition also provided information about voting rights. Organizers explained that certain offenses do not remove voting rights and that pathways including suffrage bills exist for restoring those rights.
