Ocean Springs police remind residents of e-bike and bicycle rules

The Ocean Springs Police Department is reminding residents that electric bicycles are subject to the same general traffic duties and local regulations as traditional bicycles.

The department said riders should remain seated, maintain control and avoid dangerous stunts such as wheelies or riding with fewer than both wheels on the roadway. Bicycles and e-bikes may not carry more people than they were designed to accommodate, and passengers must have a firmly attached, appropriate seat.

On roadways, riders may not travel more than two abreast unless they are on a path or roadway portion designated exclusively for bicycles. They also may not be pulled, pushed or otherwise propelled by another bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, automobile or other vehicle.

The reminder says riders should not ride or park bicycles, e-bikes or skateboards in ways that block pedestrian traffic. Racing another bicycle, pedestrian or motorized vehicle on public roadways is prohibited, and riders should keep both hands available to control the handlebars rather than carrying items that interfere with control.

Under Mississippi law, an electric bicycle is generally treated as a bicycle rather than a motor vehicle, dirt bike or all-terrain vehicle. E-bikes may be operated where bicycles are permitted, subject to applicable state and local restrictions.

State requirements listed by the department include a ban on Class 3 e-bike operation by anyone under 16, a working speedometer on Class 3 e-bikes, and preservation of manufacturer labels identifying classification, assisted speed and motor wattage after modifications. The motor must disengage or stop functioning when the rider stops pedaling or applies the brakes.

The department also cautioned that vehicles that do not meet Mississippi’s legal definition of an electric bicycle may be subject to different licensing, equipment and operating requirements. It urged riders to remain alert and respect motorists, pedestrians and other bicyclists.
