More than 50 take part in Meridian 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

More than 50 men, women and children participated in a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Meridian’s Downtown Parking Garage, repeatedly climbing the stairs to honor members of the Fire Department of New York who died on Sept. 11, 2001. City of Meridian firefighters had a strong presence at the Thursday evening event.

Participants, including competitive and noncompetitive climbers, walked or ran the equivalent of 110 stories, with some taking part in full fire gear. The climb represented the height of the World Trade Center and honored the firefighters involved in the rescue operation there.

Before the stair climb, Lt. Michael Hemrick of the Meridian Police Department and Battalion Chief Kenny Robinson of the Meridian Fire Department received Spirit of 9/11 awards.
