The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency District 1 Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Survey has been reopened through Sept. 15, 2026, and DeSoto County residents are encouraged to participate.
The survey asks residents for input on local hazards, vulnerable areas and how they receive emergency information. It includes questions about concerns such as tornadoes, flooding, power outages and cyber disruptions.

Supervisor Lee Caldwell said residents’ local knowledge is important to hazard planning. “The people who live in these communities know where the problems are,” Caldwell said.
The January 2026 winter storm was cited as a recent example of the importance of preparation, coordination and communication. DeSoto County is also home to Mississippi Task Force One, whose members train to respond to some of the state’s most challenging emergency situations.
