Reeves opens $300M SDI Biocarbon plant in Lowndes County

Gov. Tate Reeves said on Facebook that he opened SDI Biocarbon Solutions’ new $300 million facility in Lowndes County, calling it the largest biomass production facility in the world and saying it is revolutionizing American steel production.

Reeves posted that the project is “solidifying Mississippi as a manufacturing leader” and called the investment “another huge win for our state.” The post did not include details on employment, production capacity or a timeline for the plant’s ramp-up.

SDI Biocarbon Solutions is a company that produces biocarbon, a carbon-rich material made from biomass. Biocarbon and similar products are increasingly used by industry as alternatives to fossil-derived carbon sources in processes such as steelmaking, and companies and policymakers often highlight them for their potential to lower reliance on coal.

State officials and economic development agencies have sought to attract manufacturing and industrial projects to Mississippi in recent years. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
