Hattiesburg police arrest man after pursuit near checkpoint
HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — The Hattiesburg Police Department arrested a man after a vehicle pursuit that began near a safety checkpoint on Thursday, the department said.
Officers with the department’s Special Operations Division conducted a safety checkpoint in the area of McInnis Loop and Broadway Drive on June 11. At about 10:33 p.m., officers observed a vehicle back up, turn around and drive away from the checkpoint, the department said.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver, identified as Quamane Cooper, 36, of Hattiesburg, fled. The department said Cooper ran multiple stop signs and traffic signals during the pursuit before the vehicle left the roadway and overturned.
Cooper was booked into the Forrest County Regional Jail on two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of felony fleeing a law enforcement officer, the department said. The Forrest County Regional Jail is the detention facility that serves Forrest County, Mississippi. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
