Toppers split doubleheader with Christian Brothers

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Blue Mountain Christian University split a midweek doubleheader with NCAA Division II Christian Brothers on Tuesday at the BMCU Sportsplex, dropping the opener 7-3 before rallying for a 5-4 extra-inning win in game two, BMCU athletics said.

In game one, Christian Brothers built a 3-0 lead with runs in the first, third and fourth innings. The Toppers cut into the deficit in the fourth when Rachel Rommel delivered an RBI single that scored Gail Wisher. Blue Mountain tied the game in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Kelsey Camp that drove in Anna Harrison and Neely Barrier. Camp’s two RBIs gave her a single-season school record with 35.

Christian Brothers scored four times in the sixth to take control. Anna Harrison finished 3-for-4 with three stolen bases for the Toppers. Bri Langley took the loss, tossing five innings with one strikeout, and Madison Montgomery provided two scoreless innings of relief, the school said.

Blue Mountain fell behind 2-0 in game two but rallied. Bre Ramsey had an RBI double in the fourth and Karen Wisher followed with a two-RBI double to put the Toppers ahead 3-2. Christian Brothers rallied for two runs in the fifth, but Mikaylah Fuqua tied it in the bottom half with an RBI single. In the eighth, Gail Wisher delivered a walk-off RBI single up the middle to score Fuqua and seal the 5-4 victory. Neely Cooper went the distance in the extra-inning win, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out three. The Toppers recorded nine hits in the nightcap.

Blue Mountain Christian will host William Carey (Miss.) on April 17 at 2:00 p.m., according to the schedule posted by the athletic department. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
