Toppers open SSAC play with 7-4 win over Point
BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Blue Mountain Christian University beat Point University 7-4 on Friday at the BMCU Sportsplex, opening Southern States Athletic Conference play with steady offense and timely pitching, the school’s athletics website reported.
The Toppers struck first on a passed ball with two aboard and extended the lead with back-to-back scores in the second and third innings. Jake Meilstrup hit an RBI double that plated Yaidel Perez in the second, and Perez drove in another run in the third.
Blue Mountain added a sacrifice fly by Reise Thomas in the fifth. Point scored twice in the sixth, but Jarret Morris answered with an RBI single to restore a multi-run margin. In the seventh, Morris delivered a two-RBI base hit that drove in Ross Polizzi and Jacob Bryant for insurance.
Chip Harris started on the mound and Jesse Hancock worked in relief to limit the Skyhawks’ threats. Offensively, Cody Presley had three hits and the Toppers finished with 10 hits as they held on despite two late runs by Point in the ninth.
Blue Mountain and Point meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. at the BMCU Sportsplex. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
