Reeves cancels Mississippi special session, expects redistricting by 2027

Gov. Tate Reeves said he is canceling Mississippi’s special legislative session that had been set to begin next Wednesday after a federal appeals court vacated an order requiring the state to redraw its Supreme Court map.

Reeves said in a Facebook post that he expects lawmakers to redraw congressional, legislative and Supreme Court lines between now and the 2027 elections. The Republican governor said he also expects congressional lines to be redrawn in 2027.

Redrawing political maps, commonly called redistricting, determines which voters are grouped together for legislative, congressional and judicial elections and can influence the partisan balance of elected bodies. Courts sometimes order map changes when they find violations of voting rights or other legal standards; a vacated order removes the immediate court mandate to alter a map.

The developments could shape who represents Mississippi voters and how districts are configured heading into the next statewide and federal contests. This is a developing story. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
