Mississippians Have Reclaimed $216 Million in Lost Life Insurance Benefits
JACKSON, Miss. — More than 10,300 Mississippians have claimed over $216 million in lost life insurance benefits through a free national locator tool, the Mississippi Insurance Department announced — and officials say millions more may still be unclaimed.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ Life Insurance Policy Locator helps consumers find deceased loved ones’ life insurance policies and annuity contracts, including policies beneficiaries may not even know exist. In 2025 alone, nearly 2,400 Mississippians used the tool to recover nearly $43 million in lost benefits.
Every year, millions of dollars in life insurance benefits go unclaimed. Sometimes beneficiaries can’t find a deceased relative’s policies or, in some cases, may not even know the policies exist.
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, and the department is urging Mississippi residents to check the free tool for benefits owed to their families. Media contact: Beth Reiss, communications director, 601-359-2403.
