Lee County kratom ordinance now in effect after legal challenge

Lee County’s ordinance prohibiting kratom and kratom products is now in effect following the conclusion of a legal challenge, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The Lee County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in February 2026 to prohibit the sale, distribution, possession and use of kratom and kratom products in the county. Businesses may not sell, distribute or otherwise make the products available, and individuals may not possess or use them.

Sheriff Jim H. Johnson and Board of Supervisors President Barry Parker discussed the ordinance on SuperTalk Mississippi. They said the Lee County Sheriff’s Office will enforce it in unincorporated areas, while city police departments will enforce their own ordinances within city limits.

The Sheriff’s Office said it will work with local businesses, residents and other appropriate authorities to promote voluntary compliance and clarify the ordinances. Violations may result in enforcement action.
