Senate Weekly Report

In the fourth week of the Legislative Session, the Senate deliberated legislation in committee meetings working  towards a Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023, deadline for committees to report general bills and constitutional  amendments originating in the Senate. 

As of Friday, 1,090 bills, resolutions and nominations had been filed. 

The Senate passed the Committee Substitute for Senate Bill 2338 that would make it state law for municipal  waterworks to charge for actual usage of water, wastewater and sewer service and would ban a property value  based fee-collection system. It would require municipalities to include maintenance costs for operating the  system in the fee structure. The measure passed on a split vote and was held on a motion to reconsider. 

Also passed was House Concurrent Resolution 31 to approve a joint session of the House and Senate at 5 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023, for the Governor’s State of the State Address. 

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, the Newton County High School Choir performed in the Capitol rotunda and drew great applause. Afterwards, they spoke with lawmakers, including Senator Tyler McCaughn, outside on  the south steps of the Capitol. 

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, Senator Kelvin E. Butler led the presentation of Senate Concurrent Resolution 538, honoring the Parklane Academy “Lady Pioneers,” for winning their fourth title – The 2022  MAIS Class 6A Fast-Pitch Softball Championship, in six years under Head Coach Greg Gatlin. The team on  Jan. 11, 2023, celebrated the victory with a “PUT ANOTHER RING ON IT,” Ceremony in the school’s gym  in McComb. 

On Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, Senator Joy Fillingane and Senator John Polk, led the presentation of Senate Concurrent Resolution 514 to the Sumrall High School “Bobcats” Baseball Team and Head Coach Andy Davis for winning the MHSAA Class 4A State Championship, with a May 26, 2022, 11-4 victory over Pontotoc to  sweep the series and claim the Mississippi MHSAA Class 4A State Championship at Trustmark Park in Pearl.  

Next week, floor action will pick up to debate bills that make it past the Tuesday, January 31, 2023, committee deadline.
