Greenville mayor calls for action after second Optimum outage in a week

Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons is calling on Optimum to address recurring service outages after the Mississippi community experienced its second major disruption in one week.

In a statement, Simmons said reliable internet, telephone and communications services are essential infrastructure for city government, businesses, schools, hospitals, industries, public safety operations and residents.

He said Optimum should maintain adequate redundancy, backup systems and contingency plans so that a single failure does not repeatedly disrupt the community. Simmons also said chronic interruptions affect virtually every sector of Greenville’s local economy and daily life.

Simmons said customers continue to pay for services during the outages and called for accountability and appropriate credits, concessions or other relief for residential, business, governmental, educational, health care and industrial customers affected by the repeated losses of service.

The mayor is asking Optimum to immediately identify the cause of the recurring outages, explain the corrective measures and redundancies it will implement, and provide relief to affected customers.
